The Psychological Profile of ROK Army Recruits over the Course of Time -A series of studies to establish psychiatric screening test for conscripts(1)-

Abstract
The roles of psychiatry in military medicine include conscription of soldiers with good mental health, early detection and treatment of patients with mental illness, and active prevention through education for menta
l hygiene. Among these tasks,
conscription of soldier with good mental health s probably the most important thing. However, there is no proper screening test to prevent the conscription of mentally ill person or person who has the potential to develop psychiatric problem
during
is
military service.
This is a preliminary study for the establishment of a mass screening test for potential psychiatric problem among conscripts.
This study was performed in the recruit training center of the 3rd ROK Army Division from July to November, 1990. This recruit training center offers some advantage in the evaluation of psychiatric problem. The recruits are relatively homogenous
groups.
The control of the examinees in the 3rd Army Division is easier than other units in the ROK Army. And there is sufficient time during the training period to perform evaluation and subsequent follow up tests.
SAS, BDI, PDI and IS of 16 PF were used. There were 1009 conscripts and the training duration for each period was 6 weeks. Three follow-up tests were conducted for each period. The comparison among the 3 follow-up tests through six weeks showed
statistically significant:
(1) decrease of the mean rating score of SAS and BDI
(2) Decrease of the mean rating score of PD, FB, Nm, and Nf subscales of PDI
(3) Decrease of the mean rating score of Pm subscale of PDI through the first 3 weeks
(4) increase of the mean rating score of FG and Pf subscale of PDI
(5) increase of the mean rating score of IS through the first 3 weeks
Almost all draftees adapted desirably during the training period, especially during the first 3 weeks, However, for the problem conscripts, 3 weeks is probably too short to adjust. Therefore, it would be useful to screen them during the period of
recruit training. After screening, they have to consult the military psychiatrist for further evaluation.
